One of my clients has a Steinway grand with one chipped key top. I am wondering how I would go about getting a replacement that it the same color, size, length, etc...
The key top is not Ivory. The piano did not appear to have a specific model number on the plate.

    Hello Gary,
Unless you're going to replace them all which will make them match perfectly, you won't be able to make the replacement key top blend in as good as you can.
Looking at the picture, the key tops have different coloring to start with, caused by aging, exposure to light and dirt build-up.

    Gary,

In fact, judging by the looks of it and the way it chipped, these keytops are old (as plastic goes) and are becoming brittle. More chips are coming.  It looks like 60's or 70's replacement tops. You won't be able to reliably patch it.

I would explain this to her and recommend a new set entirely.

Contact people recovering keys for the trade. They will be able to send you bunch of removed key tops fromSteinway that era.

Send the keys off to a key service such as Walker in Kentucky. The can send you samples of various types of material. Any type of color matching to what is there will be next to impossible. If one is chipped and the keytop material is brittle more will follow

Sand/file the overhang on all keys to the fronts or at least until the chip is not so prominent.
