A client's upright appears relatively new, probably < 10 years, maybe 20. The fallboard says "Wm. Knabe." The model number on the plate is KNF-43. The serial number is YO2417299.

Is the proper method of looking this up to take Pierce, find Wm. Knabe, note that Young Chang manufactured the name for M&H after 1996, then look up Young Chang and see that the number sequence after the "YO" prefix matches a range of serial numbers listed there?

    Or maybe something entirely different?

Knabe is a Samick name now, for at least a few years. I don't know the history of how it ended up there. I hadn't heard it was in Young Chang's hands for a time. Samick sort of owned Young Chang for a while, so maybe that is when it happened. I don't know if that helps. The model and serial number are both unfamiliar to me.

    Hi Jim,

Every "YO" serial number I've seen is a Young Chang product.  The one in question is from 1999.  I hope this helps.

Thanks, Stephen, was looking for someone to either confirm what I did, or show where I messed up.

It sure isn't easy sometimes, is it?

I'd say your theory is right. 2,400,000 places it at 1999 in the YC numbers, and Pierce says YC started building under the Knabe name in 1996. The pattern of one letter followed by a number matches (could it be "Y" "zero" instead of "Y" "alpha oh"?).

That model number only turns up once in a search:
