Can any one tell me if this is the serial number or if I should look elsewhere? This piano was redone at some point I am not having luck finding other numbers.

The number is 121 cast into the plate with raised lettering.

That is the scale no.  The serial number for your piano is 5 or 6 digits, from the high 90000 up.  It is NOT the case number stamped on the cabinet parts, ofter 4 digits.

Pray someone wrote it on the front of the keyframe....

You may also find it on the keybed stamped on the top side under the action. There could be a lot of 0000's and a seperate number. Other places to look are hidden but the top of the lyre after it is removed is a possible location. 121 is the scale as Bill said.

It might be ink-stamped on the treble side of one of the plate struts.

There was also the number 23970 stamped into the treble cheek block. Is it possible that's the serial #? I thought that might be a case #. ------------------------------------------- [Ronald] [Moore] [Ft. Wayne] [IN] [260-241-1772] Moorepiano.com -------------------------------------------

William, How do you know it's in the high 90000's? According to Pierce these pianos started at 100 in 1824. ------------------------------------------- [Ronald] [Moore] [Ft. Wayne] [IN] [260-241-1772] Moorepiano.com -------------------------------------------

The serial numbers on these were originally inked on to the plate, and I'd look at the struts as mentioned.
If the plate has been sprayed over, there may still be a shadow of the number... Very slight as the paint would raised by the thickness of the ink.
Unless of course, someone did a good job and sanded the plate before spraying. But if they did a good job, the serial number would have been stamped back on.

Check the lyre. it might be on top of it.
Check the backside of the key slip.

    Happy hunting!

Ronald, production of the quarter grands did not begin until much later, around the turn of the
last century. The oldest one I have seen was 1906. I have recovered the serial number on one
by taping a piece of paper to the strut and rubbing lightly with a #2 pencil. Like others have
said, it may be in other places depending on who had worked on the piano previous. It will
be no less than six digits.

    Good luck.
