    Hello all,

I have a client who had something work its way inside their Yamaha AvantGrand N2 hybrid piano / keyboard. They called me to fix some clicking keys. Upon inspection, there's definitely something struck where the hammers would be in a normal grand. Here these are metallic canisters.

I went in thinking it would be easy to pull the action. However, the key rail and action brackets are screwed into the base of the instrument, which doesn't appear to slide out like a regular grand key frame. I can't access the screws because of the odd angle. It looks like there might be a way to take apart the top and access the action though there, but I can't find any screws that are accessible from the outside. (Yeah, real smart idea to screw everything together from the inside.)

Does anyone know how to open one of these? I'd even settle for disassembling the action if that's an option. Thanks!

Around 10 years ago we had 10 of those that an alumnus had purchase for our school. Early on there was some reason to pull the action for repair on one of them. With some assistance from from Yamaha USA were able to accomplish the task. The job required a half day of work for what should have been a simple repair. There were 43 screws that needed to be removed, and of course, 43 screws to re-assemble! (Echoes of spinet nightmares?)

These instruments are a classic case of product engineering that pays no heed future maintenance. Hopefully, the situation has been improved on newer models, but my recommendation would be; TECHNICIAN BEWARE!

Benjamin, I uploaded the document that will help you. See page 20 for N2. It is from 2012 so hopefully nothing much has changed. It's certainly time consuming but straightforward if you follow the steps. Let me know if you have trouble downloading it.

    Good luck

A big thank you to all who called / emailed / posted with info! I really appreciate it! Thanks especially to Mariana for sharing the PDF. I think I'll be able to use that to open it, but will also try to contact Yamaha just to be on the safe side.
