it would make hammer to string mating a lot easier. maybe aluminum screws would add very little weight . the hammer felt may have been a grand hammer felt pre-drilled. how do you get a screw hole into end grain of a hardwood shank ? why not get a full set of felts predrilled with holes that can then be glued up and matched to the strings and later plugged ?
