  • 1.  Action center friction resistance-in-grams numbers

    I'm going to start measuring action center resistance with a gram gauge. Would someone please give me the resistance in grams for each type of action center? Thanks in advance.

    5 to 8 gm on hammer flange
    3 to 5 gm on whippen flange
    1 to 3 on the jack
    4 to 7 on the rep/balancier post

     Where you measure from is important - there are some articles in past PTG Journals

    This may be true for repinning existing parts,

    but beware, I have seen a definite change in the industry, over the years, in newly manufactured  products from ALL manufacturers and you would be lucky to find a NEW hammer flange pinned at even 3 grams.  In my discussions with the various manufacturers, it is more about the consistency of pinning and the stability of the centerpin in the birdseye than the gram measurement of resistance ... Two of the great resources I used for this same discussion were Bruce Clark (Mason Hamlin WNG) and Rick Baldassin (Renner product) . Perhaps one of them is on this list and can comment more fully.

    Its quite possible that these ranges have changed in newer parts and that they are different  from what I have used. My info came from articles in the journal on repinning and from various discussion threads.  I have heard that some new parts have had to be eased because they barely passed a swing test meaning the gram resistance was very high. Someplace in the journal archives there is a good discussion of where to measure. I think there is something on the WN&G site showing a jig and a Corex gauge and how to measure various centers. It would be good to hear from Bruce and Rick or Del on this.
