    Are there existing smartphone apps that do the following?

    1. Upon phone start-up the app sends a user-customizable email to a user-specificed address via local wifi.
    2. Upon appearance of a "battery low" warning, the app sends a user-customizable email to a user-specificed address via local wifi.

    These are rather generic functions, but either one of these, installed on an an otherwise end-of-service-life smartphone could be used to alert appropriate personnel about an interruption in Dampp-Chaser service.

    • If a smartphone is plugged into the same power source as the humidity system via a cube-tap inside the piano and powered on, even with a poor battery it will stay powered on unless the main supply cord is unplugged.  After being unplugged for a while, the battery will reach a level such that a warning is displayed.  Plugging it back in will reset the warning system.
    • If a system is rigged up such that the powering of the "pads" light on the DC system also supplies power to the charging port of a smartphone, the smartphone, which is normally turned off, will power on.  I'm not sure of the voltage supplied to the pads light, but if it is 5 volts, the customization becomes very easy.  Once the light is off, the battery in the phone will run down, and the unit will return to its normally-off state, ready for the next alert.

    The iphone, at least powers up as soon as power is applied to the charging port.  I'm not sure about Android.

    It's probably too much to hope that really obsolete phones, such as my stack of iPhone 4's, could download and use such programs, given Apple's app store protocols, but the ability to set up such alerts could forestall some problems we run into.  The two app concepts as articulated above could not be functioning simultaneously on the same phone, but this kind of set-up would be much more cost-effective than proprietary wireless devices that offered the same functions, in my view of things.
