After consideration, further consideration I'm just clean up the pins for now, and plan to replace all the balance rail pins at some time in the future. There is more pressing issues to address e.g. the whole action needs repining, new hammers, etc.
To deal with the 1/4" inch extra length when the time comes, measure how much deeper they can be driven in (leaving a safety margin) without bottoming assuming perhaps 1/8", and just leave the other 1/8" extra length consistent across the whole keyframe.

Subject: Balance rail pin length
Existing key balance rail pins are 50mm (2 inches) in length. Seems only 2 1/4 inch replacements are available. Well at least I can't find a source for 2 inch pins.
So if I use the 1/4 inch longer replacements, only a dozen of so need to be replaced, how best to deal with the longer length? Drilling deeper holes is not an option.
So it seems I have 2 options, leave the new pins sitting higher than all the originals, which will look amateurish. Or cut the replacement to length, meaning the bottom cut surface won't be nickle plated.
Thoughts.
Thanks,
John
