    Greetings all,
I was working on a 1907 Baldwin G today, and wanted to adjust a too-high damper upstop rail. Damper lift was higher from the pedal compared to the key, but there seemed to be no way to limit the pedal travel. No felt or capstan. Is it possible it's the damper upstop rail itself that limits the pedal/damper travel? So far, that's how I've set it, but any other suggestions are welcome. I can imagine pedal use might keep pushing the rail up?

    thanks!

The damper pedal travel is limited by a block of felt on the trapwork above the pedal rod.  Using the upstop rail as a stop will only cause the pedal to push it higher.
The pedal lift is adjusted to lift the dampers to where the keys lift them. The upstop rail is adjusted a slight bit higher, only to limit the underlever from being propelled higher and impacting back down onto the keystick.  Perhaps the trapwork felt fell off sometime ago.

You can add your own felt, can’t you,Scott? And I remember at least some Baldwin grands that had the damper unstop rail actually nailed in place. I guess they never needed adjusting.

Simplest fix is a block of hard felt glued to the keybed you could also install a capstan that you could adjust and put the felt on the trap lever. If it would fit an adjustable pedal rod may work as well

Could you set the damper stop rail to the proper height and then make a damper trap-lever stop block from hard felt so the pedal won't be able to push the stop rail up as easily. In addition, you may be able to install in the lyre a block of hard felt to limit the pedal travel. I have a selection of hammer felt remnants from hammer makers that work well for these types of adjustments.

    Scott,
Maybe the felt was just missing. Is there room for you to add a block on the keybed or on the trap lever?

Your other question- I’m certain the upstop rail functions as a stop in many instances, though I can’t imagine that’s the design intention. The whole reason behind needing to adjust the upstop would largely have to do with the pedal stop not engaging before the upstop contacts the underlevers. At least that’s the most likely reason I’m able to come up with at this point.
