Bechstein A189 String Scale

  • 1.  Bechstein A189 String Scale

Does anyone have the string scale data for the Bechstein grand piano A189? The original string gauge markings were completely covered when the cast iron plate was repainted, and the owner would like to use only the official factory specifications - not values calculated using formulas or estimates.

    Thanks

    :)

I would bet David Pinnegar could come up with that information.

I have an 85 note model A from 1896. Bechstein provided me with a stringing scale many years ago. This is what they sent:

    14-2 14.5-2 15-6 15.5-6 16-9 16.5-4 17-11 17.5-6 18-4 19-6 20-2 21-2

Also, I have a chart that cross references the case number on the beam underneath with manufacturing years. Not exact but plus or minus a year or so up to about 1908.

    Craig,

Where would 4765 fall on that chart? Im 98.6% sure that's the case # of the Bechstein B I grew up with. Never had a serial # on it.

According to the chart I have, as the numbers increase as do the years,  it would indicate that a Bechstein marked with a A cast in the plate should have a 5 digit number underneath.

I re-read your post and realized that I read too quickly. That number would indicate a date of about the 1889 or 1890. The Model B was introduced in 1902, but there was a model of the same size prior to that called the V (5). It would have had a joint at the tail end rather than a continuous rim.

Well, I distinctly remember a B cast into the plate, a "square" tail, a tied action, and 88 notes. It also had three cracked struts in it by the time I was learning to tune 50 years ago. (And the pinnlock was toast).

If Craig got the scale from Bechstein, it is likely that the sizes they use are not American Wire Gauge, but rather Metric gauge, which are about 1/2 size smaller.

I don't think I have come across a piano that uses #14 AMG in the top few notes - that is pretty heavy wire for up there.

I was thinking exactly the same thing as Jurgen.

Edit: But additionally, since the original scale for this or any other instrument was calculated using "formulas", it seems like an unusual requirement to not calculate the scale now using formulas. Especially in the bass section, as there is never any data hanging around for original bass scaling.

The A I have was restrung before I got it, so I never had any opportunity  to use for what Bechstein sent. But it's curious that it's almost identical to Travis, as he would have had to measure the gauges. If I were to restring it I would run it through a rescaling program anyway. I do just happen to have a complete original set of bass strings that came off another A. You are welcome to them if they are of any value. For research purposes.
