I just want to let you know that screwing into these holes after shimming the mechanism to the bottom of the seat fixes the racking front to back and side to side but there is tons of noise still.
I did notice that students were using these benches closed all the way. The school has some of these that are 1-1/2 years old in this condition.
I have thought of shimming the box frame under the rubber feet that stops the seat from hitting the box, to get the height to be more average.

Hi Lonnie,
I know which bench you are talking about. I have repaired at least one of those. Just like you explained.
The Boston benches have a mechanism similar in shape as the Jansen bench of two x's per side, but is lacking in so many ways. They start to rock side to side and front to back very quickly after installation in grand practice room. The movement is about a half inch. I am thinking (4 screws) of locking them at a certain height by screwing braces to the seat bottom after shimming the space in between with the wood in photo.

I do not know if this repair appropriate for your situation, but I have repaired many of the imported Kawai benches. By extending the mechanism drilling through and installing a 1/4" bolt with a lock nut.
This prevents spreading and the disconnect from the adjustment roller. (I do not know the proper nomenclature for that part)

Has anyone tried to make the Boston artist fixed at one height by screwing the cross members to the under side of the seat when the scissor mechanism gets worn out? Do you think on might need to add a resting point at the frame in 4 places as well or not?
The tops are in great shape but the metal mechanism are worn out.
