I need to replace a lost pitman on a Boston 156.

Does anyone have access to one of these to get a quick measurement and any other important detail I might want to know in advance? Does it have a pin in it, either top, bottom, or both?

    TIA

There is a pin on the top going into the lift tray.. you will have to measure the height from the trapwork lever to the tray. I am not sure about a pin on the bottom You could also call S&S tech support. I service a Boston Grand with a player unit and recall having damper seating problems because the pin was not fully seated in the tray. The rubber grommet on the tray was quite tight around the pin

Hi Peter! I have a strong feeling this is for Mr. Ma in Exeter, NH? I have all the info you need, took photos and measurements! Send me an email at jf.pianotech@gmail.com.

    Hello Juan,

Yes, you concluded correctly. I, in fact, was able to take care of it this morning. And BTW your little makeshift pitman was quite unique and working reasonably well. I used it as my length gauge. I'm going to remember that little trick (three upright hammershanks securely taped together with a piece of piano wire in the center to serve as the locator pin). The coil spring was also missing so I was able to replace that with a suitable one for now and installed a PLS.

You probably noticed the horrible damper regulation going on there, supposedly a "correction" that somebody in California did. Yikes! After things settle down with humidity I'll be back to tune and do some regulation.

Haha that was 100% improv since he wanted it fixed temporarily right then and there! I told him it might fall sooner than later (or last 10 years, you never know!). Anyway, I'm glad you could sort it out for him!

A highly creative solution! I think it would have worked well for quite a while. Impressive!
