I have a customer with a Baldwin console that has a broken B0 key. Can anyone recommend places that can make a replacement? I already contacted Reyburn. Thanks

    Hi John,

Normally, I would just reglue the key. Especially in a low value piano. Glue it back together, clamping with the keys on both sides of it and a flat piece of wood under it for the shape. Use Titebond, or other wood glue with waxed paper or cereal box liner so it doesn't stick to the "clamps". Try not to get too much glue in the balance rail hole, etc. After it's dry, sand a bit and then glue some veneer pieces to the sides around the break, sand a bit and waalaa, a strengthened key.

    Good Luck!

Thanks Gene. I have gotten a bunch of responses on FB as well and this is the plan. Thanks for the detailed information. It jives with what a few others have said as well.

I bet Debra Legg can fix it. She would also need several neighboring keys to do it (keys on either side should do it). If copying the key is necessary (more $) Michael Morgan is certainly up to the task, and he'd probably need the same sample keys).

Their contact information is on the Journal classifieds (and PTG membership directory).

Hi, as an alternate option if you want to ship it to my shop we would very likely have a direct match we can send you back. We can remove the keytop and splice onto the donor key.  Will likely be an undectable fix, as it would be similar aged donor key from a Baldwin.  We wouldn't mind doing this one for fun for you. We've had a good deal of practice with this situation. Baldwin used CNC For a lot their key actions from that era, and always interesting how often we've been able to directly swap exact keys from similar model spinets.

I am not so sure it is a console since the key end fork would seem to make it a drop action spinet . If it is a Balwin Acrosonic I probably have a spare key but would need to know for sure. B0 would be the 3rd key

Thanks James. It's a drop action and not an Acrosonic. I'm going to try gluing it with veneer.
