  • 1.  Buying premade soundboard panel problem

In my shop, i have been re-thinking each step of the soundboard making process. Making changes and comparing the result with the next new board for tonal improvements.

Here is an example: "You buy a pre cut panel, it ships to you, you stick it in the oven before gluing on the ribs".

A critical tonal, longevity and certainly a procedural error has already occurred.

    Do you see it?

Not sure where you are going with this. Your procedural description of soundboard design and construction is rather brief. So maybe your error might be you forgot to trim the panel to size? Panel is maybe not optimal thickness? Not optimal grain orientation? Panel is not made from optimal wood species? Panel is not made from optimal wood piece selection? Should have made the panel yourself? And lastly, at this point, pies and roasts belong in the oven, not soundboard panels?

When making your own panels, how do you determine which is the top so that it is cupping upwards after dying it out? If it's cupping downwards, it will be fighting against the ribbing.

Correct. I look at it to see any cupping.

Are you heating it to see which way it cups before cutting it to shape?

No. Why would I heat it?

I've not ever had a room equilibrated panel crown in a different direction after the little bit of heating I give it in my hotbox. I target between 6 and 6-1/2% moisture content. I suppose if one is drying the &*#$ out of the panel maybe it would do some strange things.
