I'm exploring insurance options for chapters that meet at universities, and other venues where insurance may be required. What type of insurance is needed? What coverage is most often required? What is the cost? What companies carry such insurance? I'm more interested in a yearly policy rather than for any one specific event.

    Hi, Richard,

You might check with HO. Years ago, when I was exploring insurance for PTG exams at different sites, I asked the head of the insurance company PTG was using at the time. (It was at a conference he attended with us.) His literal words were, “If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it’s a duck.” So it was already covered by PTG’s insurance. A PTG-authorized exam, given by PTG members, to PTG members, was a “duck”.

If it’s a PTG event or exams or meeting, given by PTG or its chapters, or our regional exam center, and attended by PTG members, then it was covered under their policy. For years, I had the company fill out a form saying we were covered, but no one at that time ever asked for it, so I stopped doing that.

I should probably revisit that whole question, since we’re still giving exams and having meetings, but other things have changed.

Thanks, Kathy, Good information and a little surprising. Did you have any documentation of insurance that you supplied to the venue in which you were operating? I'm sure a university, for example, would require something formal.

I emailed Barb in the home office yesterday but haven't heard back.

Hope all is well with you. In what is probably an overabundance of Covid caution, I won't be attending the Des Moines convention. I should go, though. I was born and raised in a small Iowa town 50 miles northeast of Des Moines.

I consulted with the home office and discovered that PTG at large does not have insurance that covers individual chapters or chapter events. So, I did a little online research and came up with quite a bit of basic information like basic insurance terminology and things to look for. Anyone interested can look at the attachment. Hope it's helpful.

It applies mostly to Arizona, but I'm sure much of the information applies across the country and for more than university venues.

Now our chapter has to decide if we can afford it. Or even need it.
