    Hello all,

I have a client with a buzz that seems to be coming from a PLS dehumidifier rod vibrating against the clip in a grand piano. The buzz went away when I slid the rod around, but I am concerned about it coming back.

My normal instinct would be to put a piece of felt around the rod in the clip, but should I be worried about the potential of overheating the felt and starting a fire? It seems extremely unlikely, as the rods don't get super hot, but obviously the stakes are also extremely high.

    Peter,

Why not simply replace the clips?

If this is the old style metal clip, replace it with the new plastic clip. If it's the new style plastic clip, replace it with a new clip. Make sure it is firmly screwed in.

It is a new-style plastic clip. I suppose I can just replace both clips and hope for the best - I probably have some extras.

You can purchase extra clips from Dampp Chaser . I install many PLS/Dampp Chasers and have never had a buzz . I would tighten the screw so none of it touches the dehumidifier rod. Also check the plastic baffle over the humidifier tank if there is one.

About a decade or so ago, I had a broken clip and had to improvise to secure the DC.  I had some 12" zip ties in my car and figured I'd try that. I've been using them ever since as they are now my go-to ever since. DC never has melted the zip tie, and I've yet to have one break after a rough piano move.  Plus, it takes less time to install vs. the clips. And the best part, they are much stronger than what Dampp Chaser supplies. Harbor Freight usually has them in bags of black 12" zip ties for $2.99.  My 2 cents...

    Thomas,

Interesting...that could possibly be the solution for the few people who decline PLS due to the the issue of drilling holes in the piano. I have a couple of those 🤔
