    It’s interesting that in the attached article there’s no mention of the artists, their thoughts and opinions. On how an artist decides which piano makes them feel most artistically free and comfortable. On whether different pianos are actually comparable in their eyes, when on stage. On how some companies compensate or recruit or accept artists into “their” group, or do not compensate at all. On how artists select the company whose pianos they want to play, or how they are selected by the company, or what the company requires of them. Plus, in many cases, I’ve seen an artist play the better piano at a site, not necessarily the one they are “tied” to.

    Who is driving this bus: artists, companies, makers or profit/loss statements? I don’t know.

    Very much food for thought.

    Hi, Parker,

    Both of Knabe and Chickering were basically done as independent entities well before WWI, M&H since 1929.

    Highly recommended reading would include:

    The Piano in America:1890 to 1940; Roell, Craig, UNC Press, 1991

    And

    Men, Women, & Pianos; Loesser, Arthur, Simon & Schuster, 1954

    Both are readily available, with Loesser's being available from archive org

    While Roell"s work is limited in range, he covers what went on during that 50-year period very well.

    What's missing would be works of similar competency that cover the periods of roughly 1860 to 1890; and from 1940 to the present.
