  • 1.  How to mend a broken Hart?

I use the Hart voicing tool almost every day, and now for the second time the needle has broken off flush with the opening of the tool, and is jammed in there so I can't get the broken shank of the needle out. The last time this happened, I just bought a new tool, but with shipping and everything they ain't cheap. I considered drilling through the hole from the side, but I don't have a bit that small and I'm worried I'd mess up the very very tiny allen threads in the brass. Has anyone had any success dealing with this, or know of how to contact the manufacturer about it?

Or, just make your own tool with a wooden (not bamboo) chopstick. Hold a needle tightly with pliers, make a hole in the center of the small end of the chopstick with the needle, pull it out, cut needle to length, put a drop of CA in the hole, insert the cut end of the needle, maybe another drop of CA at the top of the hole, and you’re done!

I haven’t owned a Hart voicing tool for years because the set screw being so small that the allen key to fit the screw head is so small and weak that the hexagonal corners always get sheared off, leaving no way to tighten nor loosen the screw.

The Hart spring tool, however, is indispensable!

I just made a few out of wood and one out of the brass from the Hart tool that I cut the end with the stuck needle off of, so we'll give that a go for a while.

Getting the needles out of this tool can be a challenge too. I sometimes just soak the end in a little jar with some acetone. Other times I've had good luck with a propane touch. One good feature of this version of the tool is the shaft has a needle hole on both ends so you can just flip it around when one breaks. You have to glue new needles in with CA glue.

I just ordered one from Erwin's without the mechanical pencil, so we'll give it a whirl too, along with some of their German needles. Jacob recommended using CA glue debonder to get a broken needle out.

I ran into the same problem you did Carl.

For the past few years, I've been using a small pin vise that I ordered from a watch repair website. I had to make two modifications to get it working properly:

    • Thinned the collar sides so it could fit between the wound tri-chords on Model D's.

    • Press-fit a brass extension into the back to make the tool long enough.

What I like about this setup is:

    • I can adjust the needle's protrusion from the collet on the fly.

    • I can swap in thinner or thicker needles depending on the situation without searching for that tiny allen wrench that I always loose.

I'll look into the watch repair pin vise. Looks like a good solution, Wes. Thanks!

I am a fan of the Hart tool and have had to work the broken ends out myself, usually with another needle through the allen screw hole.

Did you try clamping a vice grip onto the shaft of the tool and sharply tapping the pliers with a hammer to jar the needle out?

If technicians are repeatedly breaking needles in a chopstick tools, this might mean that the needles are not a good quality steel (too hard and brittle).  Use good quality English or German needles for voicing. Not dollar store Chinese stuff.

It could also point towards incorrect use of the tool. Chopstick needling through the strings is for small changes and refinement. For heavier, deeper needling, slide the action out and use  a bigger voicing tool.
