I was told by JD you bump the wire size by 1/2 when using Mapes gold.
Tremaine scaled it for me using the actual metric sizes but he said you can bump the wire size by 1/2. I don't get it.
Note 88 on the Yamaha G3 is 52mm. Tremaine calls for 12.5. %bp is 67. Inh is 14.5 The actual wire size is .030. If I increase to #13, Actual is .031
What happens to the %bp and inharmonicity ?
Any preference as to sound? Does the larger size have more body?
I'm throwing a mid high strike weight at the wire
    Basically what are the formulas?

Paulello has a downloadable Excel spreadsheet on his site that can be used to look at the scaling from the standpoint of a preferred range of tension in relation to breaking point. . It gives me an additional set of lenses through which to look when I'm making decisions about scaling.

    Keith,

What was the ORIGINAL physical diameter of the wire on 88? Was it closer to .030" or closer to .031"? Also, what did the bridge scaling markings show?

I have always increased the metric wire by 1/2 gauge if/when scaling alongside Imperial wire as there is a nearly .001" difference between them. IOW, #13 Mapes equals (roughly) #13.5 metric Paulello.

I would never bump the imperial sizes up a half gauge globally...only the metric wire.  However I'm no expert in the matter. I just do what seems to make sense.

    Keith,

I have told you that Mapes Intl Gold is metric wire and sent you the Spec Sheet from Mapes so if you want .030 and are using Mapes Intl Gold you are going to have to use either .0295 or .0305 Look at the Mapes spec sheet I sent you.

    Hi Chris,

I would think the tension reading on the gauge from both strings is affecting the overall gauge reading.  I'd be interested in knowing what the gauge reads if you were to tie one string onto the gauge and measure the breaking point.  I must admit the anxiety of watching for the string to break is revealing.

Great video Chris! You mentioned Stainless Steel. Would that be some PureSound wire?

    Hi Tremaine,
It was just SS from the Malin Co. There are now many grades of ss so there are more opportunities for choosing wire of different tensile strengths. BTW the ss has nearly the identical b% of Paulallelo type 1.

Yes, I tried single wire, but it always breaks at the tie, so I was unable to get accurate readings. The way I did it in the video is the same as in a piano. And I was able to string/resale a square piano reliably. So it must work the way I was doing it. Good question.

    Yeah,, thanks Tremaine
I wrote those questions to the group and then we talked on the phone.
I needed to compose the big picture in my memory banks. The big picture is the link to intuition. Other input, though not needed, sometimes brings major insight and understanding.
Now I can start adding the details such as the difference in metric wire and numbered American sizes.
That's after I finish the video and learn how to save files to Pscale 360, then learn to work the control buttons on the Pscale app.
Right now I just want tension on the wire.
