Curious if anyone from the Chicago area or prior association with Baldwin knew a tech named James McCormick. Lived out in Lamont.

    David,
I knew James McCormick of the McCormick
School of Piano Technology in Lombard, Illinois. As fate would have it, I graduated from the school on my 21st birthday July 24, 1981. Shortly thereafter, I ended up as a work-study student in the piano shop of the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington working under the tutelage of Doug Strong and his cohorts in the IU piano shop.
I believe our colleague Al Zajicek in Aurora, IL also studied with James McCormick.
I’m curious as to your interest in Mr. McCormick as he was a pivotal figure in my life!

Thanks for responding. I ask because I was one of the first students in the mid 70s when he first opened the school operating out of his house then and I wondered what became of him as I lost touch. I was living in Chicago at the time and took this up mostly to be able to work on my own pianos and one thing led to another, as it often does. Is he still alive?

I’m not sure if he’s still alive. We last spoke by phone 15 or so years ago. He was looking to unload a lifetime of tools etc. and I directed him to Paul Revenko-Jones and the Chicago School of Piano Technology he was running at the time with his wife Oksana.
I’m not sure what transpired, if anything, from that referral. Ben Gac went through the school and may know more about Mr. McCormick.

Well, if you have any old contact information please send it to me here or privately is ok.  I'd like to reach out and see if he's still around.

Be sure and look up Alan Zajicek (Zycheck) RPT in Aurora, IL. I believe he's still tuning and also graduated from the McCormick School of Piano Technology
