Someone has emailed me asking about the serial number of a Knabe she is purchasing. She says it is a concert grand whose plate has been painted, thereby covering the serial number, but that the number 10745 is stamped on the tops of the legs and lyre. She says that according to Pierce, that serial number would place the manufacturing date in the 1860s, but that that couldn't possibly be the case here, as the rest of the piano (plate and case style, action, etc.) appears to be perhaps from the 1920s or so. She is wondering if Knabe had a separate numbering system for concert grands. Can anyone shed light on this conundrum?
