Mr Grau left his name on the side of a key stick after reconditioning my model O in 1987. I thought it would be nice to say hello, and let him know that the piano is still in excellent condition, apart from the action and damper system (which are overdue for rebuilding anyway).

Also written on the key is "Baldwin Piano Co., Cincinnati, Ohio". Does this mean that they serviced this piano before Mr Grau? Or sold it new or pre-owned

I don't have a sure answer just some thoughts.

I usually associate "Model O" with Steinway -- is your piano a Baldwin or a Steinway?  I'm not aware of Baldwin ever reconditioning Steinways at their factory, but it's certainly possible such a thing could have happened...

It's a Steinway model O. Hence, my curiosity about the Baldwin company appearing on the keystick.

Truly a mystery. How possible is it that someone traded in their Steinway at the Baldwin factory for a better piano.

When I was on a tour of the Steinway factory in 2003 (?), we were standing on the back dock when a big Baldwin truck entered the yard, made a slow circle, went out again, and disappeared. I don't suppose this event is related to yours.

Do you happen to know which city, state or province, and country you and he were living in back in 1987? It might help us track him down.

The Cincinnati Enquirer had an obituary for a Fred Grau in 2004. Not sure if this is the gentleman you're looking for or not.
