Mapes Bass String Service Issues?

Our shop has used Mapes for decades with very good results but in the past month we ordered a single Steinway replacement bass string and our credit card was charged but we never received the string. After waiting several weeks I called  and they said the'd resend it and it finally arrived after another week. We also had serious problems with a full set of Steinway B strings were the wraps on the bottom 6 single strings at tension were 1.5" from the agraffes. We heard second hand that Mapes lost some long-time employees so just asking if anyone is experiencing similar issues with them? We understand there are very mixed opinions of Mapes so spare us the "Mapes shaming".😬

I would imagine that making quality bass strings is a difficult job position to learn and replace. There's much skill involved.

I believe Andy Wilson, technical head of the piano division, recently either retired or stepped away from his principle position. Can't comment on quality changes as a result.

I hope Mapes makes it through this period.  Arledge apparently seems to be in the process of selling their business, so I don't know any other American string makers.  I have been getting strings from JD Grandt, who is in Canada.  The last two deliveries have also come with tariffs, which seem to be around approximately $3-4 per string on a partial string replacement order.  The quality is excellent and they have great tone.

There are many excellent string companies, JD Grandt, Heller, GC, to name three.  I'm not hindered by the tariffs but I do let my customers know who is responsible and reserve any tariff charges until I get the final bill since this changes day to day. I bill the tariff charges as a separate add on.

    Hi, David.

I second your opinion on JD Grandt and Heller. I have had excellent experiences with both.

I don't know who GC is. Can you elaborate?

    Thank you.

I just want to clarify because of any misinformation spreading here....
There are ZERO tariffs on our JD GRANDT strings.

Thanks for clarifying. I didn't think there were and have not seen tariffs on bass strings so I wonder where the "$3-$4" per string that Paul reported came from?

I was mistaken about the tariffs.  Last week I got an invoice from Fedex.  I don't have a Fedex account, but I had received a similar invoice last year which I found out was for a tariff on another order from Grandt,  so of course I assumed that's what this invoice was for.  What I didn't know was that this invoice I just paid was for a shipment last September.  I have no idea why it took so long to send me the bill.

That's why I was sure that the tariffs were still in effect.  My apologies for my misunderstanding.

I have had many many broken bass strings on brand new Steinway pianos, more so after the pandemic. Pianos have arrived out of the box with obvious replacements. I always order replacements from Mapes since thats where the set came from originally, for a bichord I don't even hope anymore I just insist on replacing both strings to try to get a better match. I ordered a #1 and #3 string for a new model S 2 times, the strings that came on the piano were scaled incorrectly. Both pairs of replacements I received had totally different hitch pin loops and wouldn't fit in the piano...other than for new Steinways I do not order from Mapes. Been this way for years now.

    Chris - some small clarification?

    • you say you're finding these on "...brand new Steinway pianos, more so after the pandemic...".   I haven't heard tales of how either Steinway or Mapes weathered covid, but we're a little beyond that now.
    • I would assume that any actual "brand new" instrument would be, at very least, brought to Steinway's attention.
    • Is Steinway still using Mapes?
    • John Minor asks to spare the "Mapes shaming", but I'm not clear what he means.

For our rebuilds, we still have viable options.  For newer piano, individual string replacement, we need to know.  Steinway needs to know.

    David,

Steinway & Sons New York factory is still using Mapes. The Hamburg factory uses Hellerbass, at least for some models.

I made the statement "I always order replacements from Mapes since thats where the set came from originally" because unfortunately, in the US market we primarily work on NY made instruments and see significantly less Hamburg made pianos than the rest of the world.

I have always done my part to communicate with the NY factory, through appropriate channels/people. Beyond that, I encourage all of my colleagues who are also seeing new pianos to do the same. Steinway knows.

I personally prefer JD Grant and Hellerbass for everything else.

    David,

To clarify my comment that "We understand there are very mixed opinions of Mapes so spare us the "Mapes shaming"" I have to say i've been a member of the CAUT list beginning in 1995 when it was a handful of University folks and things were less confrontational as they now tend to be on the internet.  I stated I was simply looking to hear the experiences of others techs regarding quality of workmanship and did not need to hear "bashing"  an otherwise decent string maker. Of course we use all of the other string makers mentioned here as well.

If my short-term memory is still intact, I heard this from Michael Mohr a few months ago at the NY Steinway factory-that they are still sourcing their strings from Mapes.
