  • 1.  Missing Damper Lever Trapwork for Howard H 58 EBY Grand

Hi Folks.  Needing some help here.

Would anyone have any clues about obtaining the Damper Lever Trapwork for a Howard H 58 EBY Grand? Serial # is 384730 which would indicate it was made in 2006 or 2007, so I am thinking this piano was either made by Samick or it was manufactured in China.

As luck would have it, the piano's owners had a player system installed several years ago that proved unsatisfactory.  They requested that the player system be removed, which has been completed.  Unfortunately, the player system utilized the sustain pedal for the player system's master solenoid, and where that trapwork ended up is a mystery.  It may well have been sent to the dump.

Regardless, these folks logically would like to have a working sustain pedal now.

Does anyone know if there is still any remnant of Howard manufacturing (perhaps in Trumann, Arkansas) to be contacted to try to obtain the actual trapwork for this piano? If so, does anyone have that contact telephone number?

Or, if  Samick made this piano, is there a reliable U.S. contact anyone can pass along? I have not had any luck contacting Samick in the past.

If you haven't thrown it away, the piano disc trap work tho ugly should suffice

Your best bet is to try finding who installed the player if it was not factory installed. Trapworks have to be modified to accomodate the operation of the sustain pedal by the player and the sustain powered by the pedal solenoid . Most likely the system will now need a pitman dowel to lift the damper tray and a piece of trap lever that sits over the damper pedal rod on one end and holds the pitman at the other. Maybe you can locate another H58 owner in your area that you could visit and take pictures/measurements from. Perhaps other techs in your Chapter know Howard owners

Thanks James for your input.  I do have the pitman dowel - just need to resurrect the remaining trapwork.

I have numerous schematics for various pianos, so may work from there along with measurements from this particular piano. In my region this is the first Howard grand I have seen in ten years!
