Greetings Esteemed Colleagues,

The admissions officer for the Herb Alpert School of Music here at the California Institute of the Arts just asked me if we an "All Steinway School." I asked her why she was asking. She said it was because there is a website (Niche.com) that, among other things, rates schools (numerically) and it is one of the questions they asked.

I asked her if asked if they also asked if we were a Yamaha school, or a school completely devoted to any other piano company, or if they asked how well maintained their pianos are (regardless of brand[s]). Nope, just the Steinway question.

Wondering if others were aware of this.

It doesn't seem to be anything new to me from Steinway. They are always trying to segregate their brand. We know that they will often exhibit, their pianos at another location from the NAMM show.

When preparing students for the real world realize that musicians have to adapt to instruments they encounter. It's folly to think that they are going to have one model piano to perform on throughout your life.

I do understand too, that some institutions prefer the pedigree of having an all "brand" school. About 10 years ago, I outfitted a University with about $1 million worth of band instruments mostly which were Conn-Selmer product - a subsidiaryof Steinway.
