I was looking for articles on Grand Piano Lyre Repair . there was one by Susan Graham I wanted to read . The problem began last night but I tried again this morning . I can take a screen shot of the error message. I have done many searches of this great feature but this was the first time for this...

    James,

I would suggest you send Jason Cassel (he is a member of this community) an email with the particulars of your issue.  If you need immediate assistance, share your journal title and date and I will see if all is well on my end.  Sometimes it is just a process issue.  How long have you had the problem?

I just tried something that might help.   Use the Journal Search Table to find the article you need, get the month and date from the search table (that is the link you would click if all was good)  and then look for that year in the list of Journals by year.   It worked for me for a Dave Roberts Technical article in June of 1980.

Just FYI, Fred is looking into it -- he thinks something changed with Airtable, which is what is running the search for us.

While clicking on the link isn't working directly, the link url is displayed. You can highlight it, copy it, and paste it into your browser, and that will send you to the linked issue.

I have submitted a help request to Airtable (which hosts the Journal database on which the search is based), and am told someone will contact me within a couple days.

Thanks Fred... I will try that out. I need to know what type of bushing cloth to use for the holes the pedal rods go through on the pedal box and the pedal rod holes at the top of the lyre. I have lots of action center cloth but maybe I need to cut something off a larger sheet. Anyone with a quick reply of what they use will bail me out of a jam. Lyre has to be back on the piano for use at 2 funerals on Saturday...

    Hi, James,

What kind of piano? What age?

    Different brands require different stuff.

    Thanks.

    Best.

The piano is a C. Bechstein built in 1877 in Berlin. It was rebuilt sometime in the early 2000's here in South Carolina. The pedal rods where a bit sloppy since the two bushings on the pedal box and the two at the lyre top where worn out

    Hi, James,

    Thanks.

While the exterior-facing bushings were probably originally bushing cloth, there may well be some leather and felt blocks inside the pedal box. Almost as much fun as rebuilding a box from a Chickering of the same period.

Also, because I'm pretty OCD about it, I'd check to see what else of the trapwork may need attention whilst under there having fun.

    Kind regards.

    Horace

I got a piece of stiff leather from a local shoe repair shop to put on the damper trap lever and I have another round leather disc to glue on another part .

When you say bushing cloth what are you referring to ? is it the bulk cloth that comes in sheets or can you use action center bushing cloth ? I may even try some soft buckskin. I am talking about the bushings that are in the pedal box and the ones that are at the top of the lyre

There was a fairly recent project that cataloged and referenced all of the Journal articles back quite a few years.  It was  made nto an Excel spreadsheet and either circulated or made available.  It might have been incorporated int the on-line Journal features already, or might have even been made obsolete.  I searched through it very recently and couldn't find an article I wrote, so it might not be as complete as it should be.

    Blaine,
The journal index spreadsheet now resides on Airtable. It is the same data. If you or anyone else find something that is missing or incorrect, please let me know. And please be specific. This was a volunteer project, and no doubt some errors and or omissions crept in.

Concerning the search function, I am happy to report that while I haven't heard back yet, from Airtable support,  I rechecked the various searches and found that, though the popup asking if you really want to leave Airtable still appears, clicking Continue now leads to the target issue of the Journal.
