What's the recommended polish for taking swirls and surface scratches out of high gloss polyester finishes (like Yamaha). Hand or machine use.

I get most of my polishing compounds from these people.  They have a specific product for taking care of swirl marks.  It's a white liquid, you can use either with a machine or by hand.  They have practically anything you need for polyester buffing, and metal polishing.

    Paul

just FYI, that company no longer makes their "swirl mark remover" which would've been the appropriate product for my needs

Bummer!  I'll be more careful with the bottle I still have.  I noticed there are other companies that make a similar product.  In my local plastics store they sell Novus brand products, so I use them also.  Meguiar's products are excellent of course, though it gets confusing since they sell so many different ones it's hard to know exactly what works best.  I've used their Plast-X too, in the local auto parts stores.

Contact Allied. Ruth Ziener is THE Polyester Guru but is retired. However you can try to email her. Be very careful when using a buffer because of the heat buildup. Try learning on an inconspicuous area-definitely not the lid . I always advice polyester piano owners to use long over lapping strokes when polishing with Cory or other polishes . You could look into some of the products used on show cars but as Paul posted you have to select carefully . I may inquire a company based here in SC to see if their product is good for swirls. I used it on a C7 that I tuned for a concert and it was superb the finish looked like it was a mile deep. It was so good I was thinking of being a distributor

I've had good results by hand, soft cotton cloths, with Meguiar's Mirror Glaze Ultra Finishing Polish.

Found in auto supply houses, professional paint centers or online. If it doesn't fully eliminate the fine scratches you may have to go to a 'grittier' grade, then buff back up again. Can also be used with electric buffing wheels but I don't want to risk having it fly off the piano into a clients furniture or rugs. So I use elbow grease to apply.

You can get Menzerna from Grizzly.  That is what we used in the Bechstein factory.
