This issue came up in a thread wandering capstan lines and someone asked me how I extend the felt on the wippen cushion when the capstan needs to be moved forward such that it might contact the wooden strip at the edge of the heel. All you need is a flush cutter (pictured below). This can be done with the capstans already installed, btw, just flip the action stack over to expose the wippen heel. Here's the method in photos.
- Original capstan heel. 2. Remove the felt (just grab it with the flush cutters and pull it out, it's not glued in the center, just at the edges and comes out easily. Remove the red underfelt too. 3. Using the flush cutters snip off the front leg. 4. Precut the new felt on with a guillotine tool and glue in place. 5. Snip off the excess with the flush cutters. 6.
