Good tip Chris! Most regulating tools work better with some sort of modification.
I think you are right about missing the reason for the exact specs of the original. The biggest danger in adjusting butterfly springs is having the spring end up on the edge of the repetition lever but with proper tension so it looks likes it's properly adjusted. I've had a couple of call-backs over the years from a spring that accidently popped out off the rep lever because it was not properly seated in the grub.
Any feature that helps prevent a call back is a good feature indeed.

It just looks like whoever redesigned it wasn't aware of the built in features of the original. I actually took mine to the hardware store one day and found a tubing that fits like a glove and makes a nice handle, for the original of course, after the first wore out.

Thanks Ryan for pointing this out. We offer a 30 day money back guarantee on all our tools and supplies, so we're happy to refund or replace this. I'm on vacation, and will compare your pictures to our stock when I return next week. I've use our tool many times with no problem, as have the other techs in our shop, so I'm not sure if the one you were sent was unusual, or if it's your personal preference for that part to be shorter. Thanks again,

Just a heads up,
A while ago I misplaced my Hart spring tool and was happy to see it listed on the Reyburn Pianoworks site with a snazzy red handle. However, the dimensions of the tool are incorrect, and the tool is much bigger and clumsier than the original Hart tool. One of the smart features of the original is the location of the spring slot:
"Another unique advantage of this spring tool is shown as item (2) in the diagram. The distance from the flat side of tool to the notch equals the measurement from the side of the repetition lever to the center of the spring seat. Grand repetition springs can be removed and replaced without any guesswork. "
