When I was at UNL (Nebraska) we rebuilt a 1911 Steinway A with new board refinishing, the works. I totally rebuilt the action and restrung it. It had Henry Steinway's signature on the plate. The plate refinisher carefully masked off the signature to preserve it. It came out great and the piano is still a very nice piano. The gold was a bit darker than the new finish, but preserving the signature was worth the effort.
Best,
Paul

Subject: Saving signatures
There was a recent thread on saving signatures. I posted a description of basic technique which I won't go through again here but I'm attaching a couple photos of one piano where I refinished the plate around these.
