This is the outline I follow to do this job:
Steinway grand sustain pitman update
Put drop cloth under piano
Remove action
Remove leather from damper tray (screwdriver)
Hold sustain tray down with wedges
Arrange tools around piano for access while under
Remove damper lever stop hook completely
Remove pedal lever with spring and old pitman, pull pin
Attach 1" hole guide over old pitman hole (not spring hole)
(The una corda lever block may need to be removed)
Wear facemask
Drill out pitman hole, remove hole guide part way through
Use 1" drill to dimple the center of the damper tray
Drill ¾" hole in lever, centered on old position, leather removed first
Drill ¾" hole in damper tray though the keybed, leather removed first
Clean up holes with sandpaper
Clean drop cloth, replace under piano
Remove wedges from damper tray
Adjust pedal rod to middle, if adjustable
Polish lever pin (looks like a hinge pin)
Reattach lever with spring, using dummy pin (1/6" rod)
Select correct size new pitman
Reinstall damper lever stoop hook
Make final pedal adjustments and reinstall action
Clean up Total time about 1 ½ hours
On occasion I will also swap out the spring with a weaker one if the pedal is still too hard to push down.
