  • 1.  Steinway Grand 1914 "R-984" What does it mean?

    Posted 10-08-2023 18:42

I have a customer with a 1914 Steinway Grand without a model number on the plate but does have a marking on the plate of "R-984" and serial number 167263.  Does anyone know what this stands for?

    Thanks

    Tom

R-984 is a factory case number that tracks all the pieces as it goes through the one year manufacturing process (so they stay together). The serial number gets put on at the end when its ready to be sold either to a dealer or individual.  Both are in SS records, but only the serial numbers are in numerical order.

    Thomas,

I'm sending a handy guide sheet for determining which model Steinway you have.

One correction needed (at least) on the SS identifier:

Model I upright listed as 5' 6" tall. That's 66"...is this correct? Mighty big piano!

John, yes, very good job on the S&S Guide Sheet.  Thank you for sharing.  I'll still think of the XR as should have been an MR when I service it!  Regards, Norman.
