    I am restringing a recent Bosendorfer 225 grand.  The stringing scale has 20, 20 1/2, 22, 22 1/2, 23 & 23 1/2 strings, but only 20, 21 & 22 are readily available here in the good ol US of A.

I could try ordering the missing sizes, but what are the consequences of using only 20, 21 & 22?

    Blaine,

This does not solve your problem (sorry) but since the printed sizes are metric they would all be roughly .001" smaller if using wire we're used to here. That should reduce your needs by 33% if my math is correct.

I ordered the pre-looped wire set from the factory when I did it...glad I did.  I'll look through my stock to see if I have wire that big. I think I do.

Blaine, you do not know the consequences of leaving out 3 wire gauges, nor does anyone giving you advice, unless you examine the 225 scale in one of the scaling programs.  First it tells you what it is, and then it tells you the consequences of making other substitutions, wheresoever they fall.

That said, leaving out 3 of the gauges will likely give you an inferior and uneven result.

Peter's suggestion to order the pre-looped wire set is a good one.  If you order the wire reels, prepare to never use some of them ever again.  Pretty much the largest size I use is 21, and that rarely.  The rest will gather dust.

The largest I have is 22.5 at .049".  However I have a small amount of metric 22, 22.5, 23 in Puresound SS wire (at least I think I do, as it's at the bottom of a large pile of stuff).

The Schaff Webstore lists Mapes International Gold Series Piano Wire in all the sizes you need and more. All the way up to 24 in full and half sizes, plus 25 and 26.

    Floyd!

My bad!  I didn't notice that Schaff has MAPES larger sizes.  Thanks!

    Hi Blaine,

Couple years ago I restrung the same piano. I purchased my bass strings from GC Piano in Canada. He had those sizes of wire available for me to order from him. I'm sure JD Grandt has the same. I had him check the entire scale of the piano and he confirmed that those were the right sizes of wire for the tension across the board.  Good luck!
