Greetings,

We have to replace a nylon turnbuckle on a Young Chang-made Weber-41 upright, part of the practice rail mechanism. The threads on the upper rod are fouled, making it unclear what the thread size is (so we can clean them up with a die of appropriate size).

Does anyone know what size this thread is? We have not been able to find out from the manufacturer. (Although it is worth mentioning that Vincent Choi was very responsive about communicating and sending us replacement turnbuckles!).

Eugene and Steve,

I am assisting another tech on this matter (and trying to demonstrate the utility of these lists in the process!). He only has the upper rod with him, The threads are damaged (by a previous tech, who then tried gluing and taping things back together), so thread gauges and dies, normally my go-tos in such cases, are not feasible for determining thread size. If we knew the thread size, we would go for cleaning up the threads with a die.

I don't know the size, but I would try the turnbuckle on bolts to find a thread size. Nuts on the rod that isn't damaged would work as well, although you couldn't do that ahead of time.

 Hardware stores also have toothed gauges for measuring threads. 

First, I'd try different dies to see what will start to thread, I would think that only the closest one will work at all. Hopefully it's not something exotic.
