I own two Charles Faulk tuning levers and a Schaff extension lever. I believe I am going to need a size #1 tip to tune a Hornung & Moller grand made in Denmark in 1901. I am going to see the piano today to see for sure however there are various tips on the Schaff web site. The prices are all over the place but probably the quality is too. I am looking for a recommendation then for a Wantanabe or a Yamaha. The cheapest tip look cheap....

Reyburn sells Taffijn tips, their site lists cost for a #1 tip as $50.

Watanabe tips might be ok for occasional use, but I used them for a long time, always having to replace them because they invariably develop cracks. I thought that that’s what would happen to tuning tips until I found a Jahn tip for my Faulk lever. Solid, good tip. If you can locate an old Hale tip, those are good too. Or as others suggest…..

Used for everything which came at me, including new pianos with incredibly super tight tuning pins, my simple Schaff tips in a short angled Schaff head and extension hammer went 44 years with only one tip cracking.

I'm surprised this is an issue for people.

James, greetings.  I also need to get a #1 tip.  Mine would be for very occasional use, so I think quality will not be a big concern for me.  Gemm Piano Supply has one for $14.97.  I'm not sure of their shipping cost, but if you get it from them via Amazon the shipping is $4.23.  Regards.  Norman

i bought one from pianotek - watanabbe   I think lower priced ones look like knockoffs and like the cheap sockets in a ratchet set. many low end tools have cheap chrome on them and rust.. i did go by to check the pins on the piano and sure enough the 2.0 tips where way to big. hopefully the 1.0 will be snug and not some weird in between size. could not find my tuning pin gauge on such short notice . the piano was built in 1901 in Copenhagen Denmark . There is a wood cover over the tuning pin webbing but enough space to get my lever on some high treble pins. way too much slop.  piano has not been tuned in a bit and likely will need lots of tlc The owner told me they almost lost it getting it out of his old house in CT during a snow storm. The moving company does multiple north south moves but it sounded to me like it was Laurel and Hardy. down the road he is sending the piano cross country so will be looking for some good movers that have a clue

I've done okay with a simple Schaff #1 tip in a short angled Schaff head. I set up a simple tuning hammer (non-extension) with it installed ready for use, so I don't have to switch it out in my "real" tuning hammer.

Most pianos with #1 tuning pins are old, and the chances of finding one with tight enough pins to need a close fitting tip and an extension hammer are minimal, IMO.
