  • 1.  weaker pedal spring available for a Yamaha WX7?

    Greetings,
    I have a customer who just purchased a 1986 Yamaha WX7. Excellent piano, beautiful shape. She got a real bargain. Agraffes, great tone, easy to tune, barely a scratch on it. 

    However, she had one complaint: the right pedal is harder than normal to activate. Granted, she's a beginner and will probably get used to it, but I think a weaker spring would help. I don't have a photo, but these springs are 7/8" wide and about an inch high. Does anyone know if current Yamaha vertical pedal springs are the same dimension and less stiff? I'll try the hardware store, but that could be hit-or-miss.

    You should be able to get a much less robust spring at your hardware store. I replaced a spring on a G2's damper lever assembly a couple months ago with a lighter spring from my local hardware store. I had to shorten the spring to fit, and cutting the spring wire was quite difficult (big wire cutter, colorful language, massive strain to my wrists and forearm, perseverance).

    Bench grinder, full face mask and dust mask, care not to grind your fingers (holding the spring with vise grips), but it'll go right through the spring like butter.

    I use my Dremel with a cutoff disc for such things. Takes seconds.  Make sure to wear protection , goggles, shield, etc.  If or when those little discs break pieces go flying.
