Hi all,
Thanks for your book recommendations on the other thread I started. We're getting around to starting the series (sometime in the fall), but there will be a twist that might prove more useful and interesting than just presenting a list of books. We may be contacting individuals directly to help us with this project.
I've been looking closely at all the suggestions; keep in mind the following if you have any others as we move forward on the project:
- Many of the books are interesting, but not necessarily what we'd consider part of the "core cannon" for the advancing tech. For example, I've read The Piano Shop on the Left Bank--yes, it's interesting and a good read, but not really a good primary source/reference book for technicians. There are thousands of interesting fiction and non-fiction works concerning the piano; we can't possibly list them all. In other words, we'll be sticking to the basics--tuning, voicing, regulation, repair, a little history--and possibly branching out if we feel it useful. But again, we have to have a limit.
- Be mindful of whether or not your recommendation is still in print. Yes, many out-of-print books are fairly easy to find used. But we'll still be taking availability into consideration. If the staff is able to find one used copy listed at an exorbitant price, well, we might not be able to recommend it. Also, we'll only be listing books in English at this point. (If you'd like to translate a fantastic text on voicing from the original Urdu, Farsi, or even Linear B, go for it. I'm sure many of our Mycenaean members would appreciate it....)
thanks everyone!
Scott
