Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and thoughts!! I just returned from the patient and all is well. Used Clorox wipes which cleaned everything up nicely. Ended up replacing some bridle straps as well, and we have a happy patient and client! Thanks to everyone again!!

Yes, I have frequently seen this but assumed it was mold and ignored it or just wiped it off.
When I see it next I will try to take a sample and ID it. Someone could scrape off a sample and send it to me.
A Clorox wipe should disinfect it.

Have you thoroughly inspected the entire piano for insects, evidence of rodents, mold and mildew ? is the same type of substance on the hammers or damper felt ? I am not sure what it is. You can get a mold test kit to help identify what it is. Its best to wear gloves and a proper mold face mask as a precaution. You can look at a number of museum conservation sites to get advice and protocols. The sticky part of your description is what throws me off. Blaine Herbert may have answers.

Working on a 1984 Samick upright and found this sticky substance on the backchecks. I've been told it is a white mold. How can I get rid of it?
Thanks,
