A simple jig for holding individual hammers solidly in place while sawing off the end of the shank, after newly hanging the hammers. The jig is a block of wood, 3.5 x 5.5 x 1.75" (these dimensions are not that critical, but this is a good ball park). A slot is cut 1/2" wide, 1" deep: kerfs cut with a hand saw, then the wood between the kerfs is chiseled out. Sandpaper is glued to the bottom of the block to help keep it from sliding. The hammer is lowered into the slot, and held tightly in place by a slender wedge. One hand presses the block of wood and the shank securely downward, while the other hand saws the shank.
