Steamer for key bushings

05-18-2011 14:14

This is a canister steamer which will soften bushings on up to 5 keys at once. Made from a fire extinguisher, a 220 volt water heater element, and a row of drilled out grease fittings for nozzles.

I would also add that this steamer will clean the accidentals of the greasy accumulation we often see in heavily used pianos, (or pianos played by those with heavy makeup). It takes about two seconds per side for the steam to loosen and melt that stuff, (in Louisiana, we call it gradeaux). Just wave the key over the nozzle and wipe it clean with an old towel or other throway cloth.
The steam not only loosens all kinds of glue, even the white plastic stuff, but also sizes the balance rail holes, while leaving not water mark or stain on the buttons. I use it to remove the last bit of key end felt, etc. Drop a couple of nails in the unused jets and you have a ready source of steam.
