Thank you, Steven, for checking out the knot pics and your comments. I added one more knot pic (knot8) today.

Knot 6 and knot 1 look like a variation of the sheet bend, which if I recall from Boy Scouts was said to be good for joining two cords of different diameters.
This is my first post here. I have been reading in gratitude and sometimes amusement the discussion in this forum for quite some time. Thanks to all for your good work.

Interesting bends. #1 is unfamiliar, looks more difficult than # 2 and 3,
# 2 and 3 both appear to have been made with a larger size wire than the original wire. This seems to be a common mis-step. If the same size is available, there is absolutely no reason to use a larger wire, and at least one reason not to. If the strength of the larger wire is needed, the older wire will not stand the strain, especially at the most severe radii in the knot, (all knots, which are technically "bends" in the naval lingo, weaken the overall strength of the line). If a larger size is used in the splice, it will make a loop that doesn't close as tightly as the original, which is what these look like. It will also, if too different, allow the smaller wire to slide through its capture.
Using the original size will make a symmetrical knot, and I have always thought, might settle in faster.
Regards,
Ed
