    Hi List,

I'm wondering if there are any national moving companies (like Mayflower, Allied Van Lines, etc.) whom you would trust to move a grand piano if they are moving the rest of a house as well?  Or is it better to have the grand piano moved separately with Modern, Walter, Keyboard Carriage, etc?

    Thanks for any input!

Regular movers usually don't know how to properly move a grand piano. If you want to oversee the load and unload and set up from start to finish, go for it.  Yes, I would hire move piano movers. Especially if a very nice piano. you never know what they will do.

Transporting the piano anywhere is not the problem. It's packing it up, putting in the trailer, and reversing the procedure at the other end, where most problems occur.  The drivers of most of your reputable moving companies should have enough knowledge and experience to supervise such a move.  But if the customers wants to pay for it, he/she can contact a local piano mover at both ends to do this work. They will still have to use the equipment the moving company supplies, but at least you'll have knowledgeable people handling the piano at both ends.

Wim's suggestion of getting piano movers on each end is a good one.  I just had to fix a Yamaha grand, when the movers put the wrong bolts in the wrong holes.  These have long bolts and short bolts that go in different places.  They forced a long bolt in a short hole, and cross threaded the tee nut fixture imbedded in the keybed.  What a royal pain in the rear end to get that out.  Get someone who knows what they are doing, at least on both ends.

Excellent advice from both of you. I've always wished there was a way to
assess qualifications before the fact instead of from the resulting
    debris field afterward.

Green Mountain Movers, door to door, piano savvy.

It's easy enough to retap the cross threaded fittings.

Not so easy when the cross threading had pulled out and bent over two of the three screws holding it in place, and it was in there so hard the only way to get the bolt out of it was to have one person holding the fitting  from above in the keybed with large pipe pliers, and another person on the floor turning the bolt with all his might with a ratchet.  I wouldn't want to re-tap that one.  Sorry.
