A note of caution to those using Abel wippens to substitute for Steinway wippens from Renner.  The hammer rest cushion sits too high on these because the support block underneath is too tall.  It makes it very difficult, sometimes impossible, to achieve a proper blow distance.  Abel needs to fix this.  Photo below, the Abel wippen is on the right.

Should you reduce the felt or take the trouble of removing the felt, cutting off a 1/2” of wood, and replacing the felt?

Wim. That is an option, of course, but I think we would prefer to not have to do that with a set of new parts.

    Which option?

I hope Abel will solve the problem, but until they do, we have to deal with what they gave us.

So, again which option should we do? Cut off the felt, which will make the hammer shank bounce off and perhaps make a clunking sound? Or do we keep the thickness of the felt, and cut the wood?

    Wim.

In this case peeling off the felt was not adequate so the options are jig up to trim the block or settle for a shortened blow distance. Neither is a good option for something that should have been caught.

I have used the Abel Encore reps from Brooks for years without ever encountering any difficulties getting 1 3/4" / 45mm blow, but it has been a while since I last ordered any - is it possible that the design has changed?

If taking off some of the felt gets you to where you need to get then a bit thinner felt I don't think it's a problem.  Many hammer rest rails have felt which is not nearly as thick as these cushions.  But if you want to maintain the same felt thickness then you'll have to trim the wood. at least in my two cases.  That means building a jig that allows you to run the block through a table saw (or a router I suppose) and then gluing a new rest cushion back on the after.  Once you've created the jig that doesn't take that long but it's a bit of an inconvenience.

I don't know and I don't know if there are two different dimensions or if that is an option.  I purchased two sets from different sources and wasn't given the option. Both sets had the same problem. I don't generally use these parts so I can't speak from experience beyond these two sets.

I have an unopened box of Abel Encore.  I was going to use them next week.  Now I'm skeerd.  I will open them today and report back what I find.  They may get sent back.

    Hi David ~

    Thank you for addressing this on the public forum. Although I would have preferred to have had the time to respond directly to you;
It allows me to address everyone at once.  As we do not actually install the products that we sell, ourselves, ALL technical feedback is welcome and desired from the field.  Together with Abel, we work very hard to refine our Encore Products to meet the needs of the technicians whom we serve.  Products are what we sell, but the relationships that we build with our technicians is our livelihood.

The Abel Encore Steinway style wippen, is a wippen with an angled heel.  We have not had any problems with the rest cushion on this product and the new product that we continue to receive from Abel still has the lower felt.

However, due to the shortage of Steinway Style product on the market, we have been attempting to bring in as much product in as possible to meet the needs of the technicians.  I recently noticed this myself and have contacted Abel about this issue and addressed your concerns (as well as our own).  We will be sure to reach out to everyone that we know who has purchased these over the past two months.

At this time you are the only technician who has let me know that they have had a problem with it, perhaps others have simply cut the felt.

We have another large order of wippens arriving early next week, and we will be sure to check all product before we send it out.

We are striving to always do our best work.

Answered with dignity and understanding. Thank you Melanie for staying on top of the situation. I think I say this for everyone, thank you so much for all that you do for us techs out in the field. It’s very much appreciated.

In re-reading my post, I left out a critical detail.

We have only discovered this high wood/felt problem on the Straight Heel "Hamburg" version of the Abel Wippen.

    Hi Melanie

Apologies, I suppose I should have.  I had ordered a set from Jahn as well and it has the same issue and I also advised them.  I wanted to let people know because it could be a problem with so many people turning to other parts in view of the Renner supply issue.  Returning parts once they are open and installed is more difficult, of course.  I'm glad to hear that it's not an issue on the slanted heal wippens but the square heal was the right one for this particular job and since I mostly convert slanted capstans to vertical capstans it's my default configuration.  Other than that the parts performed fine.  I'm a bit surprised Abel didn't catch it.  Hopefully it can be resolved and there are remedies but it's just a bit more time consuming.

Hi All.  To chime in here,  I just used a set of Abel Angled heel on a Steinway A3.  Worked out great. No regulation issues whatsoever. Thanks for saving my job Melanie!  I'll have to compare those wippens to the Renner wippens that I have to see what the difference is, but couldn't have been much.

It seems like the issue is only with the square heel wippens.
