Bizarre pattern of water running / dishwashing in high treble

I have been observing for some time now (2 or 3 years) that when I am in a home tuning a piano, at whatever time of day, the tuning goes very smoothly, the house is fairly quiet and no interruptions.  That is until.............  I reach the high treble section, then............. SHHHHHHHHHHHH the faucet goes on................bang, clang, the dishes, pots and pans as loud and as long as you can imagine. I'm not kidding! It never fails (almost). The water right up there in the high frequencies accompanied by bombastic noises to remind you that all will not be easy.

I had to ask myself, is it me? Is it my style of treble tuning? Is it that I forgot to brush my teeth today?

Seriously though, I wonder if there is an conscious or unconscious need block out the sound of the high treble. Let's face it, it can be annoying to a lot of people. But it's right up there in the same frequency range. Don't get me wrong, I love my clients and am grateful for all the work but there is something when it keeps happening over and over again that makes a bit difficult to address. I put a blurb in my confirmation email finally to kindly address such a problem but no one reads it!!!

It's an interesting phenomenon though. Has anyone else noticed this?

Happens frequently when the customer is home. They ALWAYS gotta do dishes or run the water during the tuning.

It's one of those rules...like in my rural area whenever I tune at a country church and there's more than one person there. Then they sit on the front row and talk...the ENTIRE TIME! I'm thinking, "People, just move to the back of the building and we'll both be happier."

Also, even though being quiet, constantly walking back and forth giving proof to Mr Dopplar and his effect! Or leaving the ceiling fan on!

If I'm in a home it's inevitably the silverware tray.

If I'm on a stage, tuning seems to inspire whistling.

Please don't 'whistle while you work'.....

And in wealthy homes, a worker outside with the leaf blower or lawnmower.  Always!

Chuckle...so often, particularly the dishwasher.  I was at one of my favorite locations (gorgeous ocean view) tuning one of my least favorite pianos (S&S 45 1976) where the customer habitually runs the dishwasher while I'm there.  I'll add that this is a very open concept home taking full advantage of the view.  Ultra contemporary with little acoustic absorption.  This time her two twenty-something daughters were the only ones home.  They were in and out of the room, chatting and doing whatever but soooo quietly I kept checking to see if they were around!  I finished and complimented them for being much more aware and considerate than many of my older adult clients.

I consider this a variation of Murphy's Law. The closer to the treble end of the piano you get during a tuning, the louder the surrounding environment will become.

When this happens to me, and the noise actually becomes problematic, I simply ask, politely, that they turn the TV/radio down, put the dishwasher/clothes washer on hold, put a hold on the vacuuming, take the conversation into the other room, etc. Once the customer understands that I don't need absolute silence but I do need relative quiet because I actually am listening, very closely, to what I am doing I invariably receive apologies and an eager willingness to oblige.

Leaf blowers, on the other hand, I just live with. If too loud I simply wait for them to pass as it's only going to be a few minutes. But yeah, Murphy predicts that the leaf blowers will show up at the next appointment when I get into the treble section.

Oh man, it seems every appointment it's one of the things mentioned in this thread! EVERY TIME!

All of the above are annoyances, but I think the top two for me are: running water / doing dishes, and frying food. The latter is especially hard, because it usually happens right before dinner. After I've been working all day and the smells drift over... coupled with the sounds, it's almost too much to bear, LOL!

Seriously though, it's not that much of a problem. Probably because I've gotten so used to it because it happens so frequently. Just something you learn to drown out, sit out, or ask to stop. Just part o' the job!

Weed trimmers and leaf blowers are endemic here in the tropics, they "mow" the entire lawn with weed trimmers and bag all the cuttings.

Next to that for me is ballrooms with 20 workers setting china and silverware plus a scissor-lift or two grinding back and forth setting lights.

It's a noisy world out there.

Way back when I was just learning tuning I had what I figure was an almost Ideal learning situation--A small music store in a small town (heck, all the towns in Siskiyou county are small). This was back when record sales were big, and this store had listening booths AND a line of CHEAP spinet pianos. I forget the make, but on the plate was cast "Scale design by Xxxx Xxxx" (I forget the name). Now even as a newbie, I could recognize horrible scale design, and these were; I remember thinking that I would never want my name to be associated with such.  So, terrible pianos to tune, and lots of noise. If I could tune in that situation, I should be able to tune anywhere! this was the late ' 70s, probably the height of cheap, junk piano manufacturing--lots of pressed wood stuff.

Another odd thing; the store owner was tone deaf, knew it, and admitted it, the pianos got tuned because she knew they were supposed to be tuned!

    Gee, I was a LOT younger then. . . . .

I wonder if subconcsiously my clients who run the water do it to produce "White noise" to noise supress the plunk plunk in the 6th and 7th octavess a subconscious inner guidance of some sort. I simply adapt and overcome by muting off both stringss I am not tuning and letting my SAT 3 take over. I am thinking it does a better job these days anyway than my ears in these high octaves.

Perhaps it's a matter of . . . he's nearly finished so surely I can make a noise now - and that treble isn't where I play and doesn't matter anyway.

Before a day of the Nice competition I was hurriedly going through the instrument and doing the top two octaves entirely. An old lady increasingly was chatting noisily in the front row. I had to tell her to shut up. She just happened to be the leader of the Jury that day!

After hearing the young Romanian 8 year old play Bach on one pedal, however, she came up to me, thanked and kissed me.

So it's worth vocalising noisily as a tuner.

    Best wishes

    David P

Around here it is gas powered leaf blowers mounted on landscapers backs and gas weed eaters. Most of the lawn mowing is done with zero turn mowers that are done in about 5 minutes. The leaf blowing and weed wacking goes on all day since they follow a regular route and even if they are two houses down it drives you mad. As to dishwashers and washing machines most sound like cement mixers. One of my clients has a house full of mechanical clocks- floor clocks, wall clocks, mantile clocks, grandfather clocks. Best tuning time is 1-3pm

Funny you mention clocks, James. Quite a few of my customers have mechanical clocks and watches of all sorts. My favorite to listen to are the mantel clocks. I'm sure for some it is annoying, but for me it is relaxing. Finally, something that's consistent in life...

I collect antique, American-made pocket watches, and enjoy hearing them tick-tock constantly. So maybe I'm just a little biased when it comes to ticking and chiming. 😁

I always wondered if the water sound was just me!  Just the other day I was at an appointment and the guy turned on the water to wash dishes when he suddenly looked up and said, "Will this bother you?"  First time I've ever had anyone ask about the running water!  I greatly appreciated it!

I'm getting in on this a little late but I just had to chime in... Yes, yes, yes!! This quite often happens to me to. The same exact pattern that others have described! How bizarre...I kinda expect Rod Serling (The Twilight Zone) to start narrating what's going on. 😏😳😬
