    Morning All,

I understand Steinway parts prices have taken a real jump lately. I have asked Peter to send me a new price list, but in the meantime I wondered if anyone could share the current prices for a set of hammers, shanks-flanges and wippens... Steinway B.

    Thanks!

    Hi Terry,

It's not clear that Stwy is issuing a DLable .pdf of their parts catalog. It appears as though the "online store" is their preferred point-of-sale.

    For the meantime:
006209       NY Hammers glued to Hamburg   $3123
006274       NY Hammers, unbored, untapered   $1253
    005740       Hamburg repetitions              $1910

If Peter is doing his job, he will send you the link to open an account at the new online store.

I just got a set of B hammers , bored, tapered and I believe it was $1500. I will say that the latest quality of hammers has risen significantly. Some light juice needed from notes 55 and up, and that was it. No shaping was required.  The felt is a much denser felt that in years past and I was quite happy with the hammers. But the price gouging....that's a big nut to swallow.

Are the hammers now made by Renner? How is their weight, more or less consistent with the past 10 years or so?

(I'm out of the loop, since NM hasn't had a Steinway dealer or a C&A piano since 2009. Hence, I haven't even played a new Steinway in that long).

    Good question...
Peter only would elude to say that they are using a much more denser felt.
As far as weight, still close to how they've been for the past decade
    I think I measured a 10.5gm strike weight at C40
It looks like the moldings are still the soft white maple

Whatever it is, it’s not worth it. You’ll get a better product and service from Brooks or Renner.

Thanks Wim... not looking for an opinion. I usually use Renner, but have an artist requesting Steinway parts.

I'm all good with the website now. Thanks all.

Renner is now owned by Steinway and everything is changing. It seems, according to Steinway, that there will be only one Steinway part available, and to a degree it's that way now. There are no more NY improved parts and won't be. I think theae will be Renner style parts (hornbeam, hexagonal shanks etc) but the current price from Steinway (nearly double that of Renner USA) seems likely to endure across the board. Still a lot unknowns as to what this means and what's driving it but it appears to be a power play by Steinway to better control the market for their parts, new piano sales and rebuilding.

Steinway is more expensive than everyone else because they use sub-contractors and need the higher price to shave off their cut.

Dear Wim,  Where are you?  Did I hear you really are gone from your lovely garden spot?  If so, how did that go and where are you?

Wishing you all the very best.
