Well, assuming it was actually an error (I've looked around and haven't seen anything else like this), I can just hear the conversation that ensued after removing from the sand casting:
"George, you imbecile! You blunderbuss! This is unacceptable carelessness for 'the world's best piano'! This shall be your last day of work at our factory. Perhaps you could find new employment with Stieff. Better still, pack your bags and take your 'skills' to Aeolian so that we never have to see your face again!"

Hi all,
I just traced the lettering on my Knabe plate and noticed something that I hadn't before. The "M" in "WM KNABE" seems to be backwards (and yes, I fairly carefully traced the contour of the letter). Was this "a thing" or an error the builders kicked themselves over after casting the plate? It's a 1923 model C.
