We all have different perspectives, techniques and possible tips which can help others, either in showing how not to do something or being potentially helpful.

Yesterday whilst tuning on a pitch raise after a restring, here from 430 to 442, there seemed to be a possibility of sharing ideas about speed and tuning unisons by ear and by machine. A boring video about tuning pianos - Tuning by machine and ear

I rely on the machine for the scale but check by ear, and either do unisons by ear or machine and check an ear tuned unison by machine or check a machine tuned unison by ear. The nuances of the machine responds can be helpful when tuning the unison by ear, so it can be a partnership of both.

A recently graduate music student interested in tuning came to me today and we looked at tuning unisons. Apologies for not encouraging total use of ear . . . but perhaps the visual indication can be both useful and helpful in some circumstances

When piano tuning getting the three strings of each note exactly together is important and fiddly. Doing it quickly takes practice and experience and this video gives pointers as to what to listen to and look for.

I'm sure that others will have very different ways of doing things and am sure that I can improve but perhaps there might be things that I'm doing usefully well. In the training of my student I'm encouraging her to tap the lever but on this instrument the pins are tight and a light tap didn't do anything. Different instruments ask one to adopt different techniques and I explained to her that meeting every new instrument was like meeting a new boyfriend.

    Best wishes
