  • 1.  Damper Felt for Upright Bass Tricords

    I'm trying to help a customer out who wishes to replace the dampers on his 1880s Knabe upright. FWIW, the piano is in amazing original condition - you'd think it was a well cared for 50 year old high quality piano. The piano has 8 wound tricord notes. He will be using the extra long bass dampers that Piano Forte Supply has available. However, dampers for tricords is not available. Is tricord felt simply bicord felt with the extra slit in the center? Or is there something fundamentally different about tricord felt that can't easily be seen by eyeball observation? Anyone ever cut a tricord slit into a bicord damper felt? Or, of course, we could simply make our own bass tricord dampers......

    I'm thinking that maybe asking that question was a good exercise in thinking all that through. I guess it would be pretty difficult to get the slit exactly the correct depth as well as centered properly. Probably making from scratch is the way to go. Yes? Anyone aware of any other good options?

    Hi Terry,

    I don't know about other uprights with wound tri-chords, but, of course, Steinway concert grands have them, and Yamaha nine-footers used to have them (not sure if they still do). Damper felts for wound tri-chords should be available from each of them.

    Schaff sells Laoureux quality A wedge felts, 27-1/2" long and vertical cut. Cut them to fit.
