Design differences for instruments intended to be tuned at different pitches

Someone on Facebook has been asking me about tuning and in particular pitches.

The old French instruments were intended for 435 whilst perhaps Bosendorfer and other Viennese instrument for 444 and higher, even 451 or so from memory for some late victorian Broadwoods

Is it just string scaling that enables an instrument to respond best at a particular pitch or are there other considerations of sounboard thickness and dimensions?

    Best wishes
