What causes a bass string to sound great right up until the pitch is reached? I'm installing a new set of Bass String from Mapes. Two unisons( 4 strings) next to the steel.

They get a thuddy sound right at pitch, i lower the pitch and they sound good again. All the other strings sound good --uni@1 full twist, bi-@ two full twist. A friend of mine says he always did uni@ 1 half twist, and bi@2 half twist. No instructions to verify on Mapes website (they should fix that).

This is the first time i have used mapes in 3 years since the previous disaters after the new crew started. Now i'm starting to regret using them again.

But still, what causes the above mentioned string behaviour?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Chris,

I don't have an answer to your question, but I do wonder if the core is exceeding ideal tension for its core diameter? I'm curious what would happen if you take the core diameter and speaking length and inputting the numbers in the Paulello Typogram and seeing the results.

Interesting post because I was thinking about ordering a full set of bass strings from Mapes . My guess is that the strings you have are defective or not the correct ones for the piano . Did you do a string tracing of the old strings before removal as well as micrometer readings,   Winding measurements etc or did they say they have the scale for that model ? Maybe strings got mixed up and can not be brought up to the required pitch .? What brand and model piano .

It's a Badwin C grand. I sent the orignal strings in. Had to wait 4 weeks before getting them. Ugh....

Although likely more expensive,  GC Grandt, Heller and Arledge might be better choices.

Update: I ended up talking to James (who is now retired and came back to mapes part time) and was basically told the new crew is still in training.

here are some pics of the strings up close. One shows the excess swaging and the other shows the "loose" barrels that finishes off the helix.

The cause of the deadness as the pitch is reached is by over stress and coming into plasticity. I suspect they didn't copy the original scale and relied on their existing scale data which can result in errors IMO.

Anyways replacements are on the way and I believe James is checking the scale.

We've recently switched to Heller after getting great recommendations from fellow rebuilders.  Until just recently we have always worked with Arledge here in Nashville, and for many years and have always loved working with his strings, although unfortunately it seems like Arledge may not be doing bass strings currently. Heller order came in fairly quick for coming from Germany, and we really love their tape measure they send 😎

I've heard great reviews from J.D. Grandt too.  Have fun out there!

The replacement strings have the exact same I.D and O.D., I'm now concerned......

The replacement strings sound great, and it looks to me that it was the excessive swaging that had weakened the strings which resulted in the dead tone.

I remember reading stories of how piano manufacturers in the old days would seek out highly trained employees from their competitors. Now i really see the value in that.
